Good news for divers world wide, wrecks sunk between 1860 and 1970 may well be accessible to divers in the near future. This includes the famous sister ship of the Titanic, the Britannic. New legislation by the Greek government is set to be voted on next month.
The new legislation could make an end to the exhausting permit system which is in place now. Now every wreck, airplane or other sunken vessel is off limits to divers unless a permit is granted. Sadly a permit is almost never granted making diving on these objects a rare occasion.
Many famous wrecks may be accessible in the near future like the Britannic and a Junkers Ju 52 aircraft that crashed off the coast of Paros in 1943. Shipwrecks from before 1860 remain off limits to divers even under the new legislation.
